Renaissance Mainz - Childress

After separating from Fust, Gutenberg got into a lot of financial difficulty and defaulted on old debts. In Mainz, he printed some minor works and presumably worked with other printing workshops, although there are not many records of this period.

By 1462, Mainz was in political and economic turmoil. Most typographers left Mainz and settled elsewhere however Gutenberg stayed in Mainz which reduced him to poverty.

In 1465, Gutenberg was appointed to the court of the prince-Archbishop of Mainz and received a modest pension.

At the end of his life, he was blind and almost destitute.

He died on 3 February 1468.
